Samuel J. Green Charter School

A Note from the School Director

July 2012

Dear Green Families,

Welcome back to the 2012-2013 school year!  It is amazing how fast the summer break has flown by.  I trust that you've had a restful summer filled with joy and quality family time.  This year promises to be another great year at Green Charter School and I look forward to again partnering with you in the education of our students.

Our focus this year will be on literacy with a goal for each of our students to read on or above grade level.  The initiative began at the end of the school year as we asked each of our students to read two books off  a suggested book list and complete reports to turn in the first day of school.  We know that as our students continue reading over the summer, this will help to prevent summer slippage in their reading levels.  We also know that the exciting texts that  were selected will create a love for reading in our students which is our ultimate goal!

At Green Charter, we set high expectations for our students both academically and behaviorally.  As such, in addition to our focus on literacy this year, we will continue our work to develop strong character in our students.  Our belief is that high expectations for behavior allow our teachers to focus on the most important goal: student achievement.   We do this work by teaching our students core values.  This year our kindergarten through fifth grade students will continue to focus on the values   perseverance, honesty, gratitude, caring,  responsibility, respect, and forgiveness.   New this year for our Middle School students, 6-8,  are RISE Values.  They encompass everything our students have learned from kindergarten through fifth grade, but in an abbreviated format.  R=Respect, I=Integrity, S=Self Determination, E=Engagement.  Our students will have a great time practicing and learning to live these values throughout  the school year.  Living by these values will ensure that our students will thrive in any setting.

As we begin this year, I would like you to know that we are thrilled that you have chosen Samuel J. Green Charter School and it is an honor to partner with you in the education of your child.  I invite you to read through the pages of this Parent/Student Handbook.  This book will serve as your guide throughout the school year informing you of important school policies as well as important dates for events at the school.   It will also serve to keep us all focused on our mission of preparing 100% of our students for college, careers, and a successful life.  Again, welcome back and I look forward to a prosperous school year!

Sincerely,

Ava Lee,
School Director, Samuel J. Green Charter School
